Brass, stamped in high relief with a stippled background and steel back. A later and cheaper type of button made for sporting costumes.
The earliest sporting buttons were worn on the jackets of gentlemen riding ot hounds, before hunt protocol became firmly established in the very early 19th century. In the later half of the 19th and early half of the 20th centuries, sporting buttons were worn on the dark cloth coats then in fashion by men who were sporting enthusiasts.
