Loop Shank

The State seal of Massachusetts with a ribbon below on a lined field.

A Militia had existed in North America from the earliest period of english settlement of North America.  A new militia law of 1775 instituted some months before the outbreak of the revolutionary war called for the enrollment of all males between ages sixteen and fifty.  They were organized into companies and regiments and provided with officers appointed by the Governor.  However, their duties were not taken too seriously and drills were seldom held.  Thus, at the outbrak of the Revolutionary War, the colonists had a considerable body of miliiamen to call upon for service, although they lacked real training and discipline.

The state's militia again played their part in the War of 1812 and the American Civil War 1861 - 65.  At that time, many units wore the state seal button of their own state, sometimes with an identifying monogram.  The modern concept of a National Guard emerged towards the end of the 19th century after the Spanish American War (1898).
